WHEN I GET OLD...

So he returned home to his father.And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

THE PRODIGAL SON

Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now, instead of waiting until you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.
“A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and took a trip to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money on wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him to feed his pigs. The boy became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.
“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired men have food enough to spare, and here I am, dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired man.”
“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’
“But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put on him. Get a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening in the pen. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found. (Read Luke 15:11-32).

God’s love for each individual is so great that He seeks out each one and rejoices when he or she is found. We may be able to understand a God who would forgive sinners who come to Him for mercy. But a God who tenderly searches for sinners and then joyfully forgives them must possess an extraordinary love! This is the kind of love that prompted Jesus to come to earth to search for lost people and save them. This is the kind of extraordinary love that God has for you.
In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger son, like many of us, wanted to be free to live as he pleased. He had to hit bottom before he came to his senses. It often takes great sorrow and tragedy to cause people to look to the only One who can help them – Jesus. Are you trying to live life your own way? Stop and look before you hit bottom. You will save yourself and your family much grief.

In this parable, since the son left, the father watched and waited for his son’s return. He knew that one day, he will come home and we read, “And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”

There was no day that the father did not look out by his porch waiting for his beloved son to come back home. No matter what your mother and father may have treated you in this life, you have an Ever-Living God and Father in heaven who loves you unconditionally. God’s love is perfect, constant, patient, and welcoming. Right now, you are reading God’s compelling invitation – “Whatever you have done, whatever you have become, it doesn’t matter. Please come home.”

THE MORNING AFTER

"Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets." –Luke 5:5

 "At thy word," says Peter, as he promptly obeys, therein repeating the watchword of seas and stars, of winds and worlds. It is clear that if it is done in faith, the simplest action of life maybe sublimely great.  The flash of the wave as it covers Peter's net maybe as sublime before the Lord as the glory of the Red Sea billow when it returned in its strength.  God who sees a world in a drop wonders in the smallest act of faith.  We measure not moral and spiritual things by rods and chains.  The common act of fishing at Christ's word links Peter with all the principalities and powers and forces that in all ages have known this as their only law: "He spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast" (Psalm 33:9).    We, too, shall have fellowship with the sublime if we know how to be perfectly obedient to the word of the Lord.

BLUE NUDE

 How beautiful you are, my darling!
       Oh, how beautiful!
       Your eyes behind your veil are doves.
       Your hair is like a flock of goats
       descending from Mount Gilead.

 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
       coming up from the washing.
       Each has its twin;
       not one of them is alone.

 Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon;
       your mouth is lovely.
       Your temples behind your veil
       are like the halves of a pomegranate.

 Your neck is like the tower of David,
       built with elegance [a] ;
       on it hang a thousand shields,
       all of them shields of warriors.

 Your two breasts are like two fawns,
       like twin fawns of a gazelle
       that browse among the lilies.

 Until the day breaks
       and the shadows flee,
       I will go to the mountain of myrrh
       and to the hill of incense.

 All beautiful you are, my darling;
       there is no flaw in you.

DRINK DEEPLY

For you will nurse and be satisfied at her comforting breasts; you will drink deeply and delight in her overflowing abundance.
-Isaiah 66:11

“Yet “where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” Oh, for an angel’s tongue to tell of the wondrous mystery! My poor pen is quite unequal to the trememdous task.

How does one attempt to describe the grace that flashed so favorably from those languid eyes; the grace that fell in cleansing drops from those opened veins; the grace that poured in torrents from the pierced side; the grace that heaved and tossed and struggled convulsively in those tortured limbs; the grace that fought and wrestled and at last conquered in that anguished spirit; the grace that even began interceding for the transgressors as Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34); the grace that cried with a mighty voice, “It is finished” (John 19:30), before the Savior bowed His head and gave up His spirit; the grace that ascended out up on high, leading captivity captive and giving gifts unto men (Ephesians 4:8). Of this grace I dare not write upon further.

May it be your happy lot to sail upon the sea of grace, for fathom it you never can! May you drink from that fountain of grace, for you shall never be able to drink it dry! May God give you the bliss of knowing in your own experience how much grace abounds through the atoning sacrifice of Christ upon the cross!”

LEAP FOR JOY

But let all who take refuge in You be glad, let them ever sing for joy; And may You shelter them, That those who love Your name  may exult You.
-Psalm 5:11

Our happy God must be approached and worshipped by a happy people.  A cheerful countenance is a sign that the oil of grace has been poured into the heart.  "Glad homage pay with awful mirth."

"Come before Him with joyful singing."  Worship is an act which must, to every rightly instructed heart, be one of great solemnity, but at the same time it must not be performed in the servility of fear, and therefore we come before Him, not with weepings and wailings, but with psalms and hymns.

"For the Lord is good."  This sums up His character and contains a mass of reasons for praise.  Resting on His sure Word, let us rejoice and bow before One who has never broken His Word or changed His purpose.  Let us come into His presence even now, and speak good of His name.

-Charles Haddon Spurgeon

BRIGHT SAILS BEFORE DARK

True praise sets the heart ringing its bells and hanging out its streamers.  Never hang your flag at half-mast when you praise God.  No, run up every color, let every banner wave in the breeze, and let all the powers and passions of your spirit exalt and rejoice in God your Savior!

"Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell;
Before Him exceedingly rejoice."

AMAZING GRACE

The Touch of the Master's Hand

By Myra Brooks Welch

'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it sacredly worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But held it up with a smile:

"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar"; then "Two!" "Only two?
Two dollars, and who'll make it three?

Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
Going for three....." But no,
From the back of the room, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;

Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose string
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said: "What am I bid for the old violin?"
And he held it up with the bow.

"A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two?
Two thousand! And who'll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
And going, and going," said he.

The people cheered, but some of them cried,
We do not quite understand
What changed its worth." Swift came the reply:
"The touch of a master's hand."

IF YOU ARE WILLING

"let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by this name this man stands here before you in good health. "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone.
"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

ACTS 4:10-12

And a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said,
“Lord if you are willing, You can make me clean.”
Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, I am willing; be cleansed.”
And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Matthew 8:2,3

Dr. Thompson in his famous work, “The Land and the Book,” speaks of lepers in the East and says, “The hair falls from the head and eyebrows; the nails loosen, decay and drop off; joint after joint of the fingers and toes shrink up and slowly fall away. The gums are absorbed, and the teeth disappear. The nose, the eyes, the tongue and the palate are slowly consumed.” The disease turns a man into a mass of loathsomeness. Leprosy is nothing better than a horrible and lingering death.”

The man had as much poison in him as one poor body could contain; and yet he believed that Jesus of Nazareth could make him clean. If you are full of sin, if your propensities and habits have become untamable, I pray the Holy Spirit to give you the faith enough to believe that the Son of God can forgive you and renew you. Jesus can turn your death into life, your corruption into beauty.

Faith must be fixed on Jesus alone, for there is “no other name given among men whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus is God’s ultimatum of salvation: the unique hope of guilty men and women both as to pardon and as to renewal.

Yet, there are some that even love their leprosy – men and women who do not wish to be saved from doing evil. They would like to go to heaven, but they must have their drunken frolics, their fornications and adulteries, their greed and worldly lusts. They would like to be saved but not from the sin that is the cause of it.

None of us can imagine that this leper meant that the Lord Jesus could make him comfortable in remaining a leper. Some came to fancy that Jesus came to let us go on in our sins with a quiet conscience. His salvation is cleansing from sin, and if we love sin, we are not saved from it.

We cannot have justification without sanctification. There must be a radical change, a change of heart, or else we are not saved. Just as this leper needed a thorough physical change, so do you need an entire renewal of your spiritual nature so as to become a new creature in Jesus Christ.

The Lord Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the Living God who can be moved to compassion for those who are forlorn and lost, full of evil and self-condemned, those who are leprous with sin. Not you who are self-righteous! You yield Him no space to display His miraculous force. You who are whole have no need of a physician (Matthew 9:12).

Be hopeful then, those laden with guilt and conscious of their depravity, you furnish the empty vessels into which His grace maybe poured, the sick souls upon whom He may display His matchless power to bless and to save. This leper shall be a picture – I hope a mirror – in whom you will see yourself. May God grant you the faith to fall on your knees, and cry to Him, “Lord if you are willing, You can make me clean.”

(Excerpted from “The Lord and the Leper” by Charles Haddon Spurgeon)

SUNBATHER

WHAT DO WOMEN DO ALL DAY

Every minute, to and fro,
That's the way my hours go;
Bring me this, and take me that,
Feed the dog, take out the cat.
Standing up I eat my toast,
Drink my coffee, thaw the roast.
Empty the garbage, make the bed,
Rush to church, then wash my head.
Sweep the kitchen, wax the floor,
Scrub the woodwork, clean the doors;
Scour the bathtub, then myself;
Vacuum carpets, straighten shelves.
Eat my sandwich on the run...
Now my afternoon's begun.
To the baseball game I go,
When will there be time to sew?
Meet the teacher, stop the fight,
See the dentist, fly the kite.
Help with homework, do the wash,
Iron clothes, put on the squash.
Shop for groceries, cash a check,
Fight the crowds, now I'm a wreck;
Dinner time it soon will be,
"What's for dinner?" they ask,
Wait and see.
Dirty dishes crowd the sink,
Next there's popcorn, then a drink.
Will they never go to bed?
Will I ever get ahead?
"Bring me water." "Get the light."
Turn off the TV, lock the bike.
"Where's my pillow?" "Hear me prayers."
"Did you lock the door downstairs?"
At last in bed, my spouse and I,
Too tired to move, too weak to cry.
But e'er I doze, I hear him say,
"What do women do all day?"

MOTHER AND CHILD

"Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands."
Isaiah 49:15-16

Our Father in heaven, sovereign, creator of all things, all praise and love to You! Today I come to lift up to You every mother and child who will come across this path. I pray that You will draw them near You and come to know You and Your Word in a living and personal way. May Your blessing, protection, and provision be upon them. May You guide and strengthen them - binding them in one spirit and in one love for You. May we, as mothers persevere in caring, praying, and nurturing our children in Your ways that they may live this life to honor You. Make us the wife and mother that you want us to be. Thank You Lord Jesus for all the wonderful works that You have done and will continue to accomplish in our lives!

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us, when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

I love sunsets. At the end of the day, it reminds me of God's faithfulness. No matter what we've gone through, we can be sure that He is able to complete that which He has started in our lives and make everything work out for our good and for His glory. He is able to do immeasurably more than what we can imagine, satisfy the desires of our hearts, as we put Him first in our lives.

ROSE VIOLET

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FLOWER

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, for the world was intent on dragging me down.

And if that weren’t enough to ruin my day, A young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, “Look what I found!”

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals all worn—not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away.

But instead of retreating he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with overacted surprise,” It sure smells pretty and it’s beautiful, too. That’s why I picked it; here, it’s for you.”

The weed before me was dying or dead. Not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.”

But instead of him placing the flower in my hand, He held it mid-air without reason or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time that weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun as I thanked him for picking the very best one. “You’re welcome,” he smiled, and then ran off to play; unaware of the impact he’d had on my day.

I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps from his heart, he’d been blessed with true sight.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see the beauty in life, and appreciate every second that’s mine.

And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose and smiled as I watched that young boy, another weed in his hand about to change the life of an unsuspecting old woman.

THEN GOD ANSWERED...

The Book of Job is unparalleled in its literary excellence, a verbatim transcription of God’s words that enable us to understand God’s great love and His eternal purposes in a unique, though somewhat disconcerting and surprising way.

Does God send suffering as punishment for sins? The book of Job contains no compact theory of why good people suffer. It is an amazing account of the best man on earth experiencing the worst calamities. Eloquently, powerfully, Job demanded answers from God, and God seemed indifferent.

God’s magnificent speech in Job 38-42 has attracted much attention. I too marvel at the wonderful images from nature and yet along with my awe and wonder come a nagging sense of bewilderment. God’s speech seems most striking in what it does not say. In fact, the speech avoids the issue of suffering entirely.

Although Job may help us form our questions about unjust suffering, it fails to give many answers for a very simple reason… Job is on trial. The book does not provide direct answers to the problem of pain – but poses a test of faith in its most extreme form. God has known all along that the real question traces back to the original challenge of Job’s faith.: “Does Job fear God for nothing?”…” Will he continue to trust God even after he forfeits it all?

Will you continue to trust God even after He takes your health, all that you own, love and treasure? “Like Job we are called to trust God even when all the evidence seems stacked against us” (Philip Yancey).

In this series of paintings inspired by Job 38:1-38 in the Holy Bible, I would like you to take glimpses of the wonders of God’s creation. Whatever you maybe going through right now, I pray that you trust in God alone through faith in His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. May you find joy and comfort in the truth that those who are in Christ have an awesome Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent God who is in complete control!

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that
the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
-James 1:2-4
